UAF Develops Pakistan’s First Multi-Functional Vegetable Transplanter to Tackle Climate and Water Challenges

FAISALABAD: In a significant step towards climate-resilient agriculture, the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has developed the country’s first Multi-Functional Vegetable Nursery Transplanter, aimed at reducing production costs, conserving water and improving crop productivity amid growing climate challenges.
The machine has been developed under PARB Project (22-390), led by Director Water Management Research Center (WMRC-UAF) Dr Muhammad Zaman as Project Manager and Engr Shehzad Ahmed, Additional Director General of the Agricultural Mechanization Research Institute (AMRI), Multan, as team leader.
A Farmers’ Day was organized at the Water Management Research Center to demonstrate the technology and raise awareness among growers about its potential role in climate-smart farming. The event was jointly arranged by the Department of Irrigation & Drainage, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, WMRC-UAF and AMRI Multan.
The newly developed transplanter is capable of performing multiple operations in a single pass, including preparation of two beds, mulch laying, drip lateral placement and transplanting of four rows of vegetables simultaneously. By integrating these operations, the machine significantly reduces labor dependency, fuel consumption and field preparation time.
Speaking at the demonstration, Dr Muhammad Zaman said mechanized transplanting plays a vital role in efficient water management, particularly in the context of increasing water scarcity and erratic weather patterns caused by climate change. He explained that uniform planting and proper spacing enable better irrigation scheduling, reduce water losses and enhance nutrient use efficiency.
“With rising temperatures and depleting groundwater levels, we must shift towards technologies that promote sustainable water use and climate resilience,” he said.
Chairman Department of Irrigation and Drainage Dr Muhammad Adnan Shahid highlighted the urgent need to modernize irrigation practices to cope with declining water availability. He noted that efficient irrigation techniques ensure that water reaches the root zone with minimal wastage, helping small farmers adapt to changing climatic conditions.
Former Vice Chancellor Arid Agriculture Dr Rai Niaz emphasized the role of smart irrigation technologies, including drip and automated systems, in promoting water conservation and maintaining productivity under climate stress. He said integrating mechanized transplanting with smart irrigation can significantly enhance crop survival rates and reduce environmental footprint.
Engr Shehzad Ahmed stated that the transplanter has been designed according to local field conditions and farmers’ needs. By combining multiple functions in one operation, the technology lowers operational costs, improves plant survival and enhances overall field efficiency — key factors for sustainable agriculture in a warming climate.
Deputy Director Vegetable Research Institute Mr Sajjad pointed out that vegetable production in Pakistan largely relies on manual transplanting, which is labor-intensive, time-consuming and increasingly costly due to labor shortages. He said the new machine offers an efficient and climate-adaptive alternative that can help farmers maintain profitability while conserving resources.
Agriculture experts at the event noted that innovations such as the Multi-Functional Vegetable Nursery Transplanter are essential for strengthening Pakistan’s food security, particularly as the country faces increasing climate risks, including heatwaves, water scarcity and unpredictable rainfall patterns.
The development signals a shift toward mechanized, water-efficient and climate-smart farming practices aimed at building long-term resilience in Pakistan’s agriculture sector.
