Faisalabad Launches First Battery-Swapping Station to Promote Low-Carbon Urban Transport

FAISALABAD: In a move aimed at reducing urban air pollution and promoting climate-friendly mobility, Faisalabad has launched its first electric battery-swapping charging station, allowing electric motorcycle users to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in just one minute.
The pilot project was inaugurated by Commissioner Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh at the Faisalabad Urban Transport Welfare Society’s petrol station. Initially, the facility includes two battery-swapping cabinets capable of charging 24 batteries and a fleet of five electric motorcycles. Authorities plan to install 50 battery-swapping cabinets across the city by December 2026.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Sheikh said the initiative is designed to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by offering a faster and more convenient alternative to conventional charging, while helping reduce carbon emissions and improve urban air quality.
“This project aims to provide citizens with an affordable, modern and environmentally sustainable mode of transport. Expanding electric mobility is an important step towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels and addressing the growing challenge of climate change,” he said.

To use the service, commuters will be required to download the E-Swap mobile application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, register with their personal details, including their national identity card and residential address, and complete a verification process. Once approved, users can pay the subscription fee through JazzCash, Easypaisa or a banking application, giving them access to electric motorcycles, swappable batteries and the entire battery-swapping network.
Unlike conventional charging, which can take several hours, the battery-swapping system enables riders to resume their journey within a minute by exchanging an empty battery for a fully charged one.
Officials said the initiative supports Punjab’s broader efforts to promote clean energy and sustainable urban transport as cities face increasing environmental and climate-related challenges.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by E-Swap General Manager Mr. Eugene Qi, E-Swap Infrastructure Incharge Muhammad Moazzam, Faisalabad Development Authority Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, Additional Commissioners Tanveer Murtaza and Afzal Tarrar, Municipal Corporation CEO Usman Ghani, FITS Administrator Rahat Ali, and other senior officials.
