Faisalabad Welcomes Eco-Friendly Electric Bus Service: A Milestone for Sustainable Public Transport

Faisalabad has entered a new era of sustainable public transport with the inauguration of the city’s first-ever electric bus service by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The initiative, part of the provincial government’s broader climate action and clean transport agenda, aims to reduce air pollution, cut carbon emissions, and provide modern travel facilities to the public.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced major development projects for the city, including the establishment of Faisalabad IT City, a Rs. 40 billion Water and Sanitation System, and advanced cancer treatment facilities at Allied Hospital. She also declared that senior citizens, women, students, and differently-abled individuals would travel free of charge on the new buses, while the general fare has been set at Rs. 20.
The first phase of the project introduces 30 electric buses in Faisalabad, running on major routes such as Yusuf Town to Seigal City (22 km) and University Roundabout to Sadhar (18 km). These buses, equipped with Wi-Fi, mobile charging ports, CCTV cameras, and separate compartments for women and reserved seats for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, are expected to benefit over 24,000 passengers daily.
Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan highlighted that the project will be expanded across Punjab, with 1,500 electric buses to be deployed by October 2025, including 150 designated for Faisalabad Division. Dedicated charging stations are also being developed to support uninterrupted operations.
Experts say this shift toward clean public transport will significantly help tackle rising levels of urban air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in Punjab, while also easing traffic congestion. By combining affordability, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability, the electric bus service sets a benchmark for climate-resilient urban mobility in Pakistan.
