Faisalabad to Establish Modern Landfill Site as Punjab Approves Rs 4.35 Billion for Climate-Smart Waste Management

FAISALABAD: The Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) has approved Rs 4.35 billion for the establishment of modern landfill sites in two districts, including Faisalabad, as part of Punjab’s efforts to strengthen climate-resilient waste management systems.
According to the approved plan, Faisalabad’s new engineered landfill site will be developed on 150 acres along Jaranwala Road near Lakhuwana. The site will have the capacity to safely dump 1,100 tonnes of waste per day, while recycling and resource-recovery components have also been integrated into the project to reduce environmental pollution.
Commissioner Faisalabad Raja Jahangir Anwar said that work on the project would begin soon as per the approved design and environmental guidelines. He added that the landfill will be completed within the specified timeframe to modernise the waste management system and curb practices contributing to climate change, such as open dumping and waste burning.
Environmental experts say that engineered landfill sites not only reduce methane emissions a key driver of climate change but also help protect soil and groundwater from contamination. The new facility is expected to significantly improve Faisalabad’s resilience against air pollution and environmental degradation.
The initiative aligns with Punjab’s broader climate action goals and international commitments to sustainable urban development.
