Seminar Highlights Climate-Smart Farming to Address Agricultural Challenges

FAISALABAD: To address the growing challenges faced by the agricultural sector due to climate change, including declining crop productivity and increasing threats to food security a seminar titled “Modern Practices of Climate-Smart Farming” was held at the main library of Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad.
The seminar was organized by the Pakistan Society of Agronomy in collaboration with the Agronomic Research Institute Faisalabad. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Scientist Agricultural Research Dr Sajid ur Rehman said that climate change has severely disrupted traditional agricultural systems, pushing farmers into serious economic difficulties. He stressed that adopting climate-smart farming practices has become inevitable under the current circumstances.
He explained that healthy soil plays a crucial role not only in improving crop growth but also in absorbing carbon from the atmosphere, thereby helping reduce the adverse impacts of climate change. Dr Sajid ur Rehman emphasized the importance of balanced fertilizer use, efficient water management, and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies to conserve natural resources and build climate resilience.
Newly elected President of the Pakistan Society of Agronomy Dr Naveed Akhtar took oath during the seminar and said that he would work actively to promote climate-smart agriculture and improve the quality of agricultural research. He added that sustainable agricultural development cannot be achieved without field-level guidance by experts and practical training for farmers.
Agricultural University Faisalabad expert Dr Fahad Rasool said that by adopting modern farming techniques, higher yields can be achieved even with limited resources, which would greatly benefit farmers facing climate-related pressures.
A large number of agricultural scientists and farmers attended the seminar, including former Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad Professor Dr Asif Tanveer, Director SAWIE Dr Tasneem Khaliq, Director Agricultural Information Dr Asif Ali, Dr Intizar ul Hassan, and Hafiz Naveed Ramzan. Participants unanimously agreed that the judicious use of water and soil resources, timely awareness of changing climatic conditions, and continuous training of farmers are the only effective solutions to the ongoing agricultural crisis.
