Punjab launches strict action against polluters to protect environment

FAISALABAD: The Punjab government has intensified its crackdown on environmental violations under the Suthra Punjab initiative, enforcing strict penalties to curb pollution and promote responsible waste management. The move comes as part of broader climate action efforts aimed at reducing environmental degradation and protecting public health across the province.
Authorities have warned that individuals, industries, and commercial units found violating cleanliness and waste disposal regulations will face heavy fines. Those responsible for littering streets, roads, and public places will be fined up to Rs 10,000, while anyone engaged in unauthorized waste collection, transportation, or sorting may also be penalized. Burning garbage in public or private spaces has been declared a serious environmental offence and can lead to fines reaching Rs 500,000, up to three years imprisonment, or both.
Industrial units discharging wastewater into drains without permission will face fines of up to Rs 50,000, while Rs 25,000 will be imposed on commercial units for similar violations. Dumping dead animals within urban limits may result in a fine of Rs 50,000, reflecting the government’s resolve to maintain sanitary and environmentally safe communities.
The initiative further introduces penalties for obstructing waste management officers in the execution of their duties. Offenders may be charged up to Rs 500,000 along with possible imprisonment. Additionally, households, shops, and agricultural lands failing to remove non-biodegradable plastic waste can be fined up to Rs 2000.
Environmental officials emphasize that these measures are vital in mitigating pollution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and safeguarding ecosystems already under stress from climate change. The Punjab government states that strict enforcement will continue, ensuring that every citizen, business, and institution plays its role in keeping cities clean and building a healthier future for the province.
